Flank Hernia:
This is a specific type of a hernia that can happen either after injury to the side of the abdominal wall or as a result of an operation done for patients with kidney problems. A flank hernia (lateral abdominal wall hernia) can happen spontaneously without previous injury or an operation. In the past hernia repair was done from the outside through the abdominal wall. Even though plastic mesh was used to bridge the gap it was very difficult to anchor the mesh to good tissues. It had a very high recurrence or failure rate. Now a days repair of this type of hernia is made easier and with better results through the endoscopic approach of hernia repair. The operation can be long but has the advantage of a very low amount of pain, small incisions and a better success rate.
